Overview

3D Conformal External Beam Radiotherapy is one of the most common forms of external beam radiation therapy [EBRT]. It effectively targets malignant tumours while sparing surrounding healthy tissues.

External beam radiation therapy [EBRT] is a type of radiation therapy that uses one or more beams to deliver high energy X-Rays to the cancerous lesion.

In this treatment, the radiation beams are customised to conform to the precise shape of the malignant tumour. Advanced imaging technology such as MRI and PET scans are used to delineate the precise location of the malignant tumour and any high risk tissues such as lymph nodes.

Highly conformal radiation beams are delivered to the tumour, while significantly reducing radiation exposure to the healthy surrounding tissue. This is achieved using equipment called a Linear Accelerator.

The precise targeting of the cancerous tumour also makes it possible to deliver higher doses of radiation beams during treatment. Higher doses of radiation are usually more effective in controlling the tumour by decreasing the tumour size and killing them.

Other Treatments Available

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy [IMRT] is high precision radiation therapy that delivers high dose, modulated radiation beams to cancerous tumours, while limiting impact on healthy surrounding tissue.

  • Volumetric modulated arc therapy [VMAT] involves the use of external radiation therapy beams being directed in a series of arcs or angles to allow for greater access to tumour. VMAT allows more difficult tumours, such as the ones wrapped around other important structures, to be targeted precisely.

  • Image-guided radiation therapy [IGRT] is a radiation therapy which utilises advanced imaging equipment and computer software to accurately target tumours. This minimises the impact on surrounding healthy tissues, resulting in fewer potential side effects from treatment.
